Organizations that work to end poverty
Warm up (10 minutes):
1. Students watch the World Bank video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o3ZF6NLDWY2.
2. Journaling activity: Students write a brief response to the video.
Lecture (5 minutes):
1. Discuss with the students the different types of organizations (governmental, NGOs, charities) that work to fight poverty.
Activities (20 minutes):
1. Have students work with a partner and list groups and organizations that work to eliminate poverty. On the board, list the organizations the students name.
2. Students work in pairs to look up an assigned organization on the Internet. Each pair of students should be assigned a different organization and organizations should be a mix of government agencies and NGOs.
3. Students create an ad for their organization (example: heifer international - poster would represent a charitable organization that works to end hunger and build sustainable agriculture in poverty stricken regions).
4. Each student writes 1-2 paragraphs that gives a brief description and overview of the organization's work, analyzes the successes and failures of the organization, and evaluates how this organization has contributed to the improved quality of life for those living in extreme poverty.
Conclusion/ daily assessment (10 minutes):
1. Each pair of students shows the class their ad and provides a brief overview of their assigned organization.
