Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Warm up (10 minutes):
1. Have students silently read the poem Poverty by Jane Taylor and write a brief reflection of the poem in their journal.
2. Facilitate a brief class discussion about the poem

Lecture (10 minutes):
1. Distribute copies of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and have students read it silently to themselves.
2. Give students background information about the UDHR.
3. Facilitate a brief discussion where students choose what they find to be important and interesting about the UDHR. Why did it stand out? What made it interesting?

Activities (20 minutes):
1. Assign students to small groups and have students re-write in plain language the rights listed in the UDHR.
2. Students write a response to the question "How does the UDHR apply to poverty?"
Conclusion/ daily assessment (5 minutes):
1. Ticket out the door where students list at least three reflections of what they learned or raise questions/ concerns about what they learned.
